What do you get when you mix a group of funny world travelers, throw in one part charming Scottish tour guide along with one part 86 year old Swedish Dad, toss in a Greek bus driver, add several outstanding local guides, top with some Kalamata olives and fresh Feta, mix well, drizzle with ouzo and olive oil, place in a Big Purple Bus to marinate? |
Growing up in the greater Seattle area, I’ve always known about Rick Steves and his Europe Through the Back Door philosophy of travel. I’ve watched countless PBS specials and 30-minute European travel shows oohing and aahing at all the quaint villages and mountain top views. In the back of my head I always had a wish to go on one of his tours. Starting with my first trip to Europe 25 years ago and on several subsequent trips, I’ve used Rick Steves' products and relied on his travel books. Back then I travelled alone or with my sister with Euro Rail passes and youth hostel cards. Life has a funny way of going on and before you know it the big 4-0 comes and goes. When I would catch a Rick Steves' show, I still dreamed of taking one of his tours. Then one day it hit me. If this wish were to come true, it would be up to me to make it a reality. So I asked my Dad, who was 85 at the time, if he could go on any of Rick Steves’ tours which one would he choose? Having grown up in Sweden and his love of nature and the outdoors, I assumed he would say Switzerland, Austria or even Ireland. Greece was his reply. So Greece it was. |
